Electronic Arts and Atomic Toys, LLC released details on a joint partnership today for the creation and distribution of the first Sims toyline to stores this fall. EA, the leader in interactive entertainment software, will provide the art and concept for the toyline while Atomic Toys will produce the actual toys. The Urbz: Sims in the City videogame is scheduled to ship on the PlayStation 2, the Xbox, the Nintendo GameCube, the Nintendo Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS this November under the EA GAMES brand.

While the media and politicians focused on Mature-rated video games in 2003, new data reveals that the percentage of M-rated games sold last year actually declined while the number of Teen-rated games sold rose, according to the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the U.S. association representing computer and video game software publishers. The data shows that combined sales for computer and video games exceeded $7 billion for the first time ever, and that a record number of console video games sold more than 500,000 and one million units.
A group of researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and MIT believe
that video games are an effective platform for learning, and have launched
the Education Arcade, an initiative to increase awareness in teachers of the
effectiveness of video games in learning, and to encourage developers to create
educational games. The program began last fall, and was featured in Technology
and Learning magazine as one of the top 10 innovative projects of 2003. Read more…
