In slightly shocking news from Nintendo, it looks like the father of Mario and Zelda , Shigeru Miyamoto, will not be taking the stage at the company's E3 press conference in LA next week, kickstarting rumours that a new Super Mario game could well be announced at the show. Miyamoto has been more focused on the family-friendly Wii titles in recent times, with experts suggesting that the decision not to push him forward this year could herald a return to the more traditional Nintendo core games. "Not to put the great man down but this is a good omen for the hardcore Nintendo fan," says Editor of NGamer , Nick Ellis. "In the last two years, Shigsy has used the press conference to announce Wii Fit (E3 2007) and Wii Music (E3 2008). Perhaps his absence from the stage this year means we'll be getting some of the announcements that we wanted last year, such as a follow up to Super Mario Galaxy." The news that Miyamoto will not be at the press conference will disappoint Nintendo's legions of hardcore fans, many of whom see Miyamoto's annual arrival on the E3 stage as one of the heartwarming highlights of the entire show. For many, Nintendo's creative powerhouse represents all that is fun and innovative about gaming (and he often provides some much-needed light relief from the marketing and sales hyberbole from the men in suits). Fanboy dreams Of course, we (along with every other Nintendo fanboy worldwide) will be secretly hoping that Miyamoto arrives on stage at the end of Nintendo's presentation to announce a new outing for Mario, Metroid and/or one of Nintendo's other major iconic gaming franchises. Nintendo has confirmed that Miyamoto will be in LA next week throughout E3 week doing the old behind-closed-doors presentations. TechRadar will be on hand at Nintendo's E3 conference next Tuesday to bring you all the latest news from the Japanese gaming giant, where Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime and new face Cammie Dunaway, Exec VP of Sales will be running the show. Stay tuned for all the latest news, opinion and interviews coming out of this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo from Los Angeles throughout next week.
We have been posting updates about the new EA Sports game 3-on-3 NHL Arcade. The game is sounding like it’s going to be a great one. I love hockey so I was very interested in finding out more about this title. While EA Sports has turned the NHL series into a solid franchise, and it’s always my personal NHL game to play each year, I liked the idea of having the option of playing an over-the-top NHL game. While Hockey fans may also like the idea, I wonder about the casual gamer and what they might want to know about the game. After all, while the Xbox Live Arcade has plenty of games to pick from, sports titles have been very limited. The ones that have been released were pretty flat. I was asked if I would be interested in sitting down with the Lead Producer of 3-on-3 NHL Arcade, Matt Maher. We had the chance for a short Q&A session over the phone.

Read on to find out why NHL 3-on-3 NHL Arcade just might be exactly what sports and causal gamers have been waiting to be released on the Xbox Live Arcade, and for links and screenshots.

We have teamed up once again with Charlie McCracken over at Joystickwidow.com to bring you another conference call. This time around 2K Sports brought in Rob Nelson, producer of MLB Power Pros 2008, to give us the run down about the game. It's coming out for the Nintendo Wii, DS and the PS2. The game is a huge hit in Japan. The team effort of Konami (the developers) and 2K Sports publishing has brought this game to the US market.

MLB Power Pros series relies heavily on a "Sim" or "RPG" style that is very popular in Japanese titles and mixes in the arcade action. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, the game sounds interesting. It uses all the MLB teams and is an official licensed MLB game. Due to the time restrictions, questions from each site were limited but should give you an idea of what to expect.

Q: When beginning development of the player characters, is it safe to say that the Nintendo Mii's were an influence?
A: Mii's fit the theme and feeling of the game perfectly. While the Mii's are used, they did not greatly influence the developing team.

Q: When developing for the Nintendo DS, was there anything in particular that you needed to change or dumb down in order to get the game to work well with the handheld?
A: Controls were made simple for enjoyment of the game. The game will feel exactly like the other versions and the team worked hard to make the DS version just as fun as the other two versions.

Q: Why is there not a release for any of the current generation consoles?
A: No plans at the present time to bring the game to the Xbox 360 or the PS3.

Rob did mention that this did not mean a version would not be possible or ruled out. I took from this answer they are taking a wait and see approach based on how the game does in sales for the PS2, DS and Wii this year. New this year to the game for the US market is two modes. The first mode is called MLB Live. In this mode you will pick your favorite player and live, train and play as that player over a ten year period. You will have training to worry about as well as each game and then make choices during the week both professional and personal. For example, you can choose to get engaged or married. This is certainly more of a Japanese trend but Rob stated that the mode will not be deep but was created to have fun.

The other mode is the Success mode where you try and make it from the minors to the major league. This will involve trying to impress scouts, making the big plays and signing the right contracts. Last year they had a similar mode making the leap from college to the minor league. I was surprised that none of the versions offer an online mode, although each will have a multi-player mode. For those owning a Wii console, this version sounds the best of the three since you can load your player in the Wii remote and play at a friend's house. Of course with the Wii version, it has the mechanics of the Wii remote. Overall I think Konami and 2K Sports are trying to bring something different to the US market which is encouraging. I have always looked forward to gaming companies to do this.

Thanks goes out to Charlie for asking me to cover the conference call and to Chase at AccessPR for hosting and arranging the call today.

Ladies and Gentleman, introducing the new boxing game in town from 2K Sports Don King Presents Prizefighter for the Xbox 360. What you are about to read is from the live conference call today with executive producer Matthew Seymour, Don King and Larry Holmes. Joystickwidow.com invited me to sit in on this interview and I want to thank them for the opportunity. We are presenting this cooperatively so it is a little different than our normal interviews or coverage of conference calls. I also want to thank Chase at AccessPR for arranging the call.

You may have read about Don King presents Prizefighter or may even have seen a little footage. It certainly is an interesting concept for the boxing genre. It is being billed as an interactive documentary with the emphasis on the real life of the sport. Don King gave hours to the team talking about his own experiences. I grew up watching Don spin his magic of words and without a doubt he knows the sport. Both Joystickwidow.com and Xboxsolution.com was asked to provide a few questions. Throughout this recap I'll place in the questions where I think they fit most.
