NHL 09 Disc Read Error Fix!

I got late word today that EA Sports have been receiving some reports of a disc read error when you try and load NHL 09. Please do not take back to the retailer until you try this fix straight from EA. You need to clear the Cache of your Xbox 360 hard drive but remember doing this will also clear any game updates and you will be prompted to update a few times when you place other titles in. EA Sports apologizes for this and the fix is a onetime deal. To clear the Cache: Go to memory blade in the Xbox 360 menu and press X, X, LB, RB, X, X if you need more help please visit the following link for further details and steps on how to do this.

    Mine just stopped working this week, coincidentally my friend who lives just down the street is now experiencing the same thing. That cache thing isnt working either.

    @Grant,
    Odd since there is a patch that fixed all known issue? are you sure you have the latest update?

    @Rich,
    Yes we both are completely updated, but upon further investingation it seems that both of our copies have that wierd stain thing around the middle of the disk. It’s wierd, we both bought the game the day it came out and have played it a lot, now all of a sudden both our copies are unreadable because of this odd stain. I dunno, i have had it for months so im not sure if EA will replace it.

    I bought my copy of NHL 09 3 weeks ago, played it for 2 days and now it gets the disk unreadable. I also have the dreaded “stain” on my copy. I did not look at it when I opened the copy because well why should you have to, so I don’t know if it was there from the get go. To make matters worse I get NCAA football 09 for xmas and after 1 day it gets disk unreadable and it has a stain on it, what is going on when u spend 60 dollars on a game and it works for a day. I still have a PS2 and all the games still work for that. Maybe I should have gone with a different route then xbox because this is pathetic. I just wanna sit with a couple buddies and have a few drinks while playing NHL 09 but unless I go through tremendous hassle I won’t get to do that. Has there been any reasoning to this at all? If not how can they continue to dodge this and get away with it. My buddy also had the same thing happen with his a couple of days ago. HELP

    @Chris and anyone who has a “Stain” on their disc it’s not a stain it’s a burn from a bad copy proccess. They left batches go through that did not copy right. Call EA support and they will send you another copy. I know people are pissed but you need to contact EA directly. I have found Emails to be a waste you can find their tech line at EA.com

    Hey i just got this game and i bought it from EB Games as a used disk. when i put it in it goes to the loading screen than says disk is unreadable i went back to the store to exchange it and the guy says just to go back home and try the cache code, so i did and nothing change. wut else could i do?

  7. January 12th, 2009 at 17:05 | #7

    @Josh,
    If you just bought the game return to EB and ask to speak with the manager. I am puzzled as why you would have the issue since it has been resolved with the update that loads when you put in the game though? Did you allow the title update to run?

    I had the game for 3 months played fine all of a sudden i got the disc read error… Every other game i play works fine… Never got this error till this game… Ok so ive tried over 4 copies of the game, ive tried burning to my hard drive, ive gotten friends to bring their copies over those dont work, ive tried using my copies on other xbox’s and they work fine…. EA charges you 60$ of money you work hard for… assuming you make 12 dollars an hour.. you’ve worked 5 hours to pay for a piece of software that is non-functioning.. Will EA refund my money since obviously its not a problem on my end???? They put out a game that only works on certain systems for whatever reason…

  9. January 23rd, 2009 at 16:07 | #9

    @Ryan,
    I am a little confused you said it worked fine now it won’t work on your console?
    EA patched this issue awhile ago so it may be your saved file? I am not saying EA did not screw up with this they did. All I can offer is the same advice call EA tech support and tell them the issue and how unhappy you are.

    I know they do everything they can to resolve the problem. Good luck I hope they fix it for you.

    Hey guys I’ve been reading all the comments …. now I bought this game when it first came out …. it has played good since i got it until about 2 months ago when the error of unreadable disc would pop up while I was browsing through the menus. Anyways like I said Ive been reading… so I checked my game and it has the STAIN like everyone is talking about near the center of the disc on the back… so im gonna call EA Support line, but my question is how do i get the patches or updates for my game cause i dont have xboxlive because i have a dailup connection… any help

  12. January 26th, 2009 at 16:05 | #12

    @Jeff,
    I don’t know any way you can patches and updates need internet service. You can ask EA tech support when you call and see if they have a way.

    I am on my second copy. I cleared my cache just to get the second copy to work. First of all, none of us should be required to do this for any game. After a couple months of playing the game, the famous message appeared again. Now I can’t play at all. Disc error. What a joke. I am out $60 now and I am just sick of this. I do not see any marks on my disc. Just for a teaser, it will let me get online and get to the faceoff and then shut down. The kicker is that I purchased an XBOX for hockey. What a joke. I bet a lawsuit comes soon from someone if not me.

    I’ve only had the game about a week now, and Xbox just started freezing. Sometimes it would let me get to the end of the game and freeze during the 3 stars presentation. ANNOYING. I installed the game to my hard drive (8gb required) and I managed to get through 2 games without a problem. Not sure if this is a fix or not, but worth a try.

    Jay, it worked! I did have to try to download the game 3 times. The first two times I got the disc error around the 16% download. The third time worked and I was able to play an entire game with no problem. I appreciate the help. THANK YOU!!!!

    Is this problem still going on. My game is freezing when I’m entering an OTP game.

  21. April 16th, 2009 at 17:18 | #21

    @Yo Momma,
    When they released the patch it seems most if not all issues have been fixed. It may just be a bad time or when you tried. If you still have issues check the NHL 09 forums or check EA tech support.

    I bought the game 4/26 and immediately had problems. Microsoft suggested I exchange the game, which I did and the same thing happened. I contacted EA and told them I didn’t even want it anymore because i was sick of it already but I can’t return it to the retailer unless Ijust want another copy of this turd. EA suggested I send it to their warrantly department with copies of receipts and they would send me an unopened game that I should be able to return to the retailer for my money back. I still have to check with the retailer to see if this will float but it might be an alternative to being out the $60.
    How did this ever win any game of the year awards when so many people are complaining?

    Just so everyone knows. EA can't fix the problem and refuses to give you your money back. After, you've blown past your 30day return period while trying to troubleshoot your pretty much screwed. However, EA did offer me any other game of my choosing. But then again that game may be defective as well….. because its EA.
