Master Chief lives. In the end, after driving off of halo with The Arbiter, Cortana, and yourself you land in a ship. You start falling off into space but you grab on. Cortana says “Tt was great serving you if you don’t make it” and you reply “We’ll make it.” It then goes to Marines saluting the dead, Johnson, Gates, marines, and “Master Chief”. The coffin says 117 on it, Master Chief’s number. Watch through the credits and DONT PUSH ANYTHING. At the end it will show Master Chief and Cortana floating on part of the Halo Ring. She will say you made it and ended the war but It will take years for people to find you both. You get in a pod and reply “Wake me when you need me.” So, thats the end. His final quote hints to Halo 4 possibly, but we just ahve to wait and see. :]

well if you think about it, i heard that the halo series spans over 3 years in the storyline, and if you think about it super soldier or not, 3 years of always being battle ready and always being the spearhead of an assault and half the time your on your own, it takes its toll on anyone, spartan or not, eventualy a person becomes tierd, and just wants to end all the crazyness, maybe by bungie killing Jon 117 off it was like them finally putting an end to all the crazyness over the whole Halo series… read the books its deeper a darker then we see in the game… very good story very good things everything fits withing itself, i recomend the books…. well yeah poor master chief it was inevetible that it had to end eventually but as a fan i totally enjoyed the ride, from Master chiefs humble beginnings to his epic final words… totally awesome!

He dies at the end of the game, his Spartan number scraped into the metal.

*sigh* has anyone out there finished Halo 3 yet? I don’t want to spoil the ending for someone who hasn’t, but all I have to say is finish it on Legendary to find out the ending of the story in its entirety.

It’s somewhat worth it, but all I can say is, the franchise should be left alone after Halo Wars ships, at least for a while. If you make too many sequals the series loses its significance.

Having said that, the writers over at Bungie could ahve put a little more effort into this last one. The plot is a little weak and a tad too coincidental for my liking.
Meh. That’s what you get for majoring in creative writing, I guess.

If you do not watch the ending credits the ending is not going to make sense to you.
Also you really need to watch the ending and the credits on all 3 levels to see the complete ending. I won’t spoil it I will say anyone who takes the time and plays through the game and does not let the credits run is going to be mislead. I also do not think the game was rushed in fact it was a great game better than Halo 2 and fun to play. We will have the review up and try not to ruin anything for those still beating the game.

After you finish the game you see how the ship crashes and that the wreckage of the ship is turned into a memorial. On the memorial you see 117 written on it as a way of just subtly suggesting that he died. HOWEVER, when you the movie ends, at the end of the credits, another movie starts. This movie shows that the ship was cut in trying to get into hyperspace/slipspace and that he’s floating around with Cortana in Zero G. Seeing how they’ll be there for awhile he puts himself on cryo sleep and tells Cortana to “Wake him when needed”.
Now, for everyone that doesn’t want to have it spoiled further: on Legendary the movie continues for 10 seconds further.
The ship starts to drift towards a planet and gets caught in the orbit.

This leaves it open for another story to be made from the existing HALO franchise. The flood is defeated, and the it looks like there won’t be anymore wars due to the Elites winning against the Brutes. Still, there is HALO WARS (prequel to HALO) and it’s always possible that the TRILOGY of HALO can end but breed forth another story.

you all have missed the big point play the last mission again. count how many people was in the room when Johnson dies the avater and master chief…… how does any 1 at all know when the captain say ” all i can say is thanks for being with him till the end he is not talking about Johnson and that master chief is already heading for the alien planet to help them cause:

1 all the rings are not destroyed
2 the flood has ruled other planets so they all can be dead
3 johnson died when the avater was with him how does anyone truly know the captain is not talking about johnson cause the way the game creators make you think that master chief is dead
4 the last driving bit gets you worked up and you forget about Johnson so when you watch that last movie make you think that it is master chief

have a think about that cause i picked up on it straight away bout 10 mins thinking about it the shock gets everyone at the end. It’s either bungie is hiding a halo 4 or truly RIP to the Master Chief which everyone agrees when i say plz be a halo 4

Even thought the cheif died, no one could actually prove the other Spartans were actually all dead.

I you look close at the “planet” it is actually a large ship of some kind or a large amanmade object..plus the music gives us a big himt as it goes up in volume. I smell Halo 4

YEA, the planet is accually onyx where master chief was pulled from battle to join up with cap. Keys. this is the planet where most of the remaining spartans died. rumors are that he crashed into it but also that the ship went into orbit….

For all those of you who couldn’t wait to RUIN the game for everyone else, the MC is still very much alive. If you would have been patient and watched the 4 minute video after the credits, you would see that the MC and Cortona are in the half of the frigate that didn’t make it through the portal. Didn’t anyone notice that the frigate suddenly seemed much smaller as it crash landed in the ocean on Earth? Come on guys, PAY ATTENTION! AND STOP TRYING TO RUIN GAMES FOR PEOPLE! DICKS!

The reason on the memorial it says 117-sparton is because the programmers want you to think that mc dead so they can bring out a halo 4 and halo wars are allready out.

doesn’t master chief does die, right at the end when master cheif is in the pod, and the ship is in space, the horizon turns blue, the ship is caught in some sort of explosion? i have no idea, but there isnt actually gonna be abother proper halo. bungie stated it was a trilogy, but they are working on spin offs, like one on the other spartans on halo: combat evolved and some marines he meets on halo 2. sum1 tell me if he actually dies, becuase that explosion thingy at the end looks pretty serious!

I want to clear something up. When I posted the story I never said he died of course I never said he did not. Of course I knew after the credits rolled that he was still alive. I simply asked a question and in the title I even stated play and find out. I am amazed at how many gamers went out bought the game played it and never watched the credits. So now everyone should be clear but Bungie has not confirmed if they will make another Halo game with Master chief. I suggest fans go and get the next book on OCT 30th. It may clue us in where they are going to go next with the series.

It cracks me up to see posts by people who say the Master Chief dies in Halo 3. Had they waited for the end credits to roll, and see the final cut-scene they would have heard his last words, as he was going into cold-sleep/stasis….”Wake me, if you need me.”

gotta be honest tho, back on earth, master cgeifs false funeral was crap, they put pictures and all on everyone elses, and on master cheifs, it says 117 which is scraped into metal. also, lots of people i know who play halo think SPARTAN III was amazing, but it was a complete failure. SPARTAN II’s were the best rained euipped and combat capable supersoliders ever. SPARTAN III’s were almost suicide soliders used as decoys. they were poorly trained, had poor armour and were euipped with crap. however, it was used becuased they didnt need to b so selective with candidates, it was cheaper, and often, the drugs used made most of the SPARTAN III’s crazy. the reason it was a success was that there were only 32 surviving SPARTAN II’s at last count (only 6 are known to be alive) but the SPARTAN III numbers were well into their 1000’s! sry 4 the explantion, its just a fact that should be known.

apparently you guys didnt watch the movies after the credits, the reason everyone thinks cheif dies is because he didnt make it through the portal. the destruction of the ark made it close early and chief was in the back with cortana. therefore after the credits they are in space floating in the cargo bay when cortana drops a beacon and says “it will be years before we get found” and she says to chief “I’ll miss you” and cheif says “wake me….when you need me. THERFORE HE DONT DIE YOU NOOBS!

Nope, he didn’t die. And due to the closing comments by that Elite Captain (to the Arbiter): “I’d like to see our home world…to make sure it’s alright.” (that’s not a direct quote, but it’s the general idea) I’m assuming that the big lit up planet thingy that the Chief, WHO IS ALIVE and in CRYOSLEEP (kinda like Walt Disney and Elvis), was floating towards is the covenant planet and since the Chief doesn’t know that there’s some sort of Covenant/Human truce thing, he’s gonna go wipe out that entire planet…on his own.

Guys, If your have a single ounce of patience in your body, you would bother to watch threw the credits. Anyone who has ever played a Halo game knows that theres has always been a final ending to get you to watch through them. From The Monitor flying away from Halo in Halo 1 and Gravemind taking over High Charity in Halo 2, this is quite obvious. Now, if you need futher proof than a final movie in the god damn game, there is the clip from “http://halo3.com/believe/shell.html” the clip called grave site, in which they dont have his body, they just assume hes dead, and they say that a Spartan never dies(read the books). Furthermore, to fully submit my point, HES NOT FUCKING DEAD, WATCH THE END.

For fuck sake every1 listen kk your all sayin watch the bit after the credits but your failing to tell them you have to do it on normal or heroic or legendary if ya a friggin noob doin it on easy you will NOT GET THE EXTRA ENDING. but if you do the legendary and complete it with much hard work you will not only get the extra ending but you actually get a bit more about 10 secs more cause hes about to crash on some friggin planet so HE IS ALIVE AND WELL he is gonna fight and kick ass. Do not watch youtube you friggin wimps do the missions on legendary or just do the las misson all the way through to get tht ending

please note just doing the last mission will not give you an achievement for completing it on legendary but for the hard work of doing the mission you WILL BE rewarded for being a little spartan worrier and get 10secs of extra fottage at the end of the credits and the bit after it where he is NOT DEAD now THE CASE HAS CLOSED MASTER CHIEF IS ALIVE AND HIS BIO HEART IS TICKING LIKE KINETIC CLOCK YAY
