RoboBlitz Xbox Live Arcade Game Review - Xbox 360
When Xbox launched the arcade service, the games offered were mostly ported over versions of classic arcade games. While die-hard gamers would enjoy a trip down memory lane, most wanted something more original and challenging. When Xbox 360 launched their Arcade service, they promised new and challenging games and at times they have managed to deliver a few gems. Now with the average cost of each game being 800-1200, they needed something new. RoboBlitz is the boldest arcade game to date. It is a platformer with the mix of Sci-Fi added in. The real question is at 1200 Microsoft Points to download the full version, is RoboBlitz worth it? Read the full review and see.

At first glance the game looks pretty simple and a bit odd. Â RoboBlitz tries to keep the storyline simple while making gamers want to like the two main characters. Carl is the brains behind creating the weapons and helping out Blitz with the details of how to get the station weapons back on-line and save both of them from the attack of the space pirates. While Blitz has a funny and unusual look, he adds something to the overall gameplay and story but he is not very bright. Fans of the older Sci-Fi spoof like Mystery Theater 3000 will get a few of the jokes written into the banter between the two quickly while younger gamers may need time to get the punch lines.
RoboBlitz is really six areas rolled into one and uses the same older styles of solving the puzzles. Once the story develops, players will be thrown into FPS battles and one on one close up combat while trying to make their way to each station and solve the puzzles. Younger gamers may need an older sibling or parent’s help to solve some of the puzzles but they are pretty basic. If RoboBlitz has a downfall, it may be the short playing time to finish the game. It can be easily beat in about 4-6 hours. Although the levels are well thought out, this may be a downer for those looking for a longer XBL Arcade game.
RoboBlitz tries to break the mold of the standard platformer and succeeds, while not perfect, it is fun and challenging. The weapons Carl makes Robo are effective and learning the battle system is pretty easy. Since this is an arcade title, the best way to find out is to download the trail version and try it before paying out the 1200 points. I would have loved to see an online co-op mode added, but for a single-player game it is fun enough to roll through on your own — It is different than anything else on the marketplace right now.

Using the Unreal 3 Engine helps the overall game and characters come to life and look great for an arcade title. Each level has a different detail added to help you feel like you’re really in the space station. At times the game has a few places that may not look as good as the rest of the game, but overall no complaints on the graphic side.

A decent mix of techno fills the games soundtrack, while I normally don’t like this style of music myself. It seems to fit the game and the storyline perfectly. The weapons and gadgets Robo encounters or uses all sound unique. Overall, a great job in the audio department as well.

RoboBlitz is certainly one of those games where a player’s skill level determines the overall replay value. Older gamers will find all the secrets and solve the puzzle with little effort. The younger player will find the game a bit more challenging and want to replay the whole thing to see if they can solve everything again. Overall RoboBlitz has a fair amount of replay value, although it may be a game that sits after you beat it before wanting to take on the story again.

Overall Score: 7.4/10 [not an average]

Although the game can be beaten in a short time span RoboBlitz manages to bring the platformer back to the XBL Arcade in a new way. I hope other game developers take the same cue and create more games like this one — fun and creative, but not perfect.
