Crackdown Xbox 360 Preview – by PureEgo

CrackdownGame developer Real Time Worlds is ready to take gamers to the future of law enforcement with their new Xbox 360 title Crackdown. This one is set in a bleak world where crime runs rampant and the standard police forces are powerless to stop the various gangs from doing whatever they want. Desperate times call for desperate measures, so the Agency, an international police organization, unleashes a new genetically enhanced super cop to deal with the situation by any means necessary. These police officers of the future are stronger, faster, and more durable than anything the world has seen before. Will this last resort be enough to save the world from total anarchy? The answer to that question lies in the hands of the player.

Gamers will be set loose in Pacifica City, a wide-open free roaming environment for them to distribute their own personal brand of justice in. You can go anywhere and do anything in this digital playground. Using the super strength of the Agent you’ll be controlling, players can climb right up the sides of buildings and then jump from rooftop to rooftop to move around. You can also use a more traditional means of getting around if you choose to. Vehicles are everywhere and are available for whatever use you can find for them. The big difference is that the law is on your side this time when you drag someone out of their car and drive off in it.

When dealing with the scum that is taking over the streets of this city, gamers will have plenty of different ways to dispatch their enemies. Aside from the traditional assault rifles and rocket launchers, you can get up close and personal with your opponents. The Agent has a deadly arsenal of hand to hand combat moves that can be unleashed with bone crushing force. If you’re not in the mood for physical attacks with your fists and are running low in ammo for your firearms of choice, there is no need to worry. Nearly anything players can get their hands on can be turned into a weapon. Cars, trash cans, light poles, or even people can be snatched up and turned into a weapon in the hands of this extremely capable super trooper.

It will feature a fully functionally co-op mode via Xbox Live that will allow players to dispense double the punishment in their pursuit of justice. Gamers can also upgrade the abilities of their Agent as they gain experience points in the game. This will let you evolve the main character into the most powerful crime fighter the world has ever seen.

What's This Game All About Anyhow? from the developer.

Crackdownâ„¢ pushes the action-driving hybrid genre into the next generation with the first ever truly 3-D playground. Enforce justice by any means necessary in Pacific City, a crime-ridden urban center primed to explode and ready for you to explore. Enter an interactive world where anything can be used as a weapon as you clean up the streets the only way you know how. Your way.
Developed by Scotland’s Real Time Worlds exclusively for Microsoft Game Studios and the Xbox 360™ console, Crackdown is the brainchild of Dave Jones, the creative genius behind many innovative game titles such as the legendary Lemmings and the global blockbuster Grand Theft Auto.

Gameplay Features - from the developer

  • True next-gen visuals: Harnessing the amazing power of Xbox 360, Crackdown players enforce justice against the backdrop of a crime-ridden metropolis that is massive in scale and meticulous in detail. The game’s unique presentation employs a highly stylized rendering technique that turns it into a living, breathing graphical novel.
  • Double the mayhem: From the initial conception, Crackdown has been built to feature a dynamic and engaging co-op experience for double the action, carnage, and intensity.
  • Free-form gameplay: For the first time ever, every inch of an urban playground has been designed for you to explore and exploit. Use any route necessary as you take down the crime syndicates, going under, around, or through the environment however you choose.
  • Over-the-top action: Get the job done, no matter what it takes. Any strategy or tactic is acceptable, so long as you re-claim the streets. Unleash the awesome powers of your agent, developing his full genetic potential, becoming faster and stronger, learning bone-crushing moves, using outrageous weapons, and defying certain death at every turn.
  • Environmental weaponry: Low on ammo? Never a problem. Thanks to an amazing amount of props and a deep physics system, you can use whatever you get your hands on as a weapon: Trash cans, vehicles, even people. Set the scene for mass destruction with a game that remembers your actions better than you do. Gather vehicles to assemble barricades, build epic piles of explosives, push it to the limit. Crackdown can take it

XBS Commentary - Our Thoughts

CrackDown looks like it is going to push the envelope of action gaming when it is released. The developer is presenting us with plenty of different methods to wreak havoc on the gangs and crime lords that are the primary antagonists in this dark vision of the future. My interest really perked up when I thought about the various ways players would be able to use cars as a weapon in this game. I also really like the freedom of movement that will be available to us in this one thanks to the inhuman strength of the main character. Few games in the free roaming genre offer this kind of mobility and it should let players come up with some very inventive ways to drop in on the bad guys. This title may or may not revolutionize this type of gaming, but it will definitely let players around the world take a really big bite out of crime, which is another twist to the game that really appeals to me. This time we’re going after the criminals rather than being one. When all things are said and done, I think Crackdown is a game that few people will want to miss out on when it is released.
