Intercooler 360 Review – Can it really keep the Xbox 360 Cool?
Ever since the launch of the Xbox 360 there has been a topic of debate, which is does the Xbox 360 needs an extra source to help keep it cool? While I am not going to go on the record and say yes to this question, I will say after using NYKO’S Intercooler for the Xbox 360, I have noticed several performance improvements.
At $19.99 can this 3 fan cooling unit really help prolong the life and the performance of your Xbox 360? Read on and see in the full product review.
Intercooler 360 – how it works
NYKO’S Intercooler for the Xbox 360 comes in a handy one piece unit. It attaches to the power plug and uses the Xbox 360’s power. It fits perfectly with a few hooks in the vents and stays in place. The unit also features an off/on switch in case you decide you won’t need the extra ventilation of the intercooler without having to remove the unit. It attaches in about a minute and at first you may notice a louder sound but in time this seems to go away.
You must make sure both the fan and the power plug are fitted securely before powering on the Xbox 360 to avoid any possible damage. It works simply like any exhaust fan and over time all you need to do is touch your Xbox 360 and you can tell it really works as promised. It also works vertically or horizontal.

Claims to keep the 360 Cooler
I never hooked up a meter to test the temperature with the unit and without it. I can tell you that I have not had some of the issues that I had before using the intercooler including disc freezing, complete system locks, or a few other issues that some have blamed on the ventilation design. I have noticed that with the intercooler working, the Xbox 360 has always been cool to the touch. It’s made with 3 powerful fans of a sturdy plastic. Throw in the fact it attaches in the back, it is hidden and works as it claims to.
Here is a chart, from the manufacturer with their claims on temperature variations with and without the Intercooler hooked up. Note: I cannot verify these numbers as I did not test the unit’s tempurature, as most gamers will not either.

The Advantages of the Intercooler
I had my doubts that this little unit would do anything more than make a noise with the 3 fans. I later noticed it does reduce the temperature of the inside of the Xbox 360. It’s inexpensive at $19.99 and several other magazines and gamers have praised this little unit. Unlike a fan stand or other cooling accessories out there, the one piece design and the fact it uses the Xbox 360’s own power is great.
There is no need to find or make room for another AC adapter and the unit stays in place. Throw in the fact my Xbox 360 is on for hours at a time and for me the choice is clear. I would rather have the extra protection than be skeptical. Throw in the fact NYKO has a great customer support team and offers replacements if indeed a unit stops working, it all adds up as a very inexpensive way to reduce possible wear of your expensive investment.

Overall Score: 9.4/10
Final Thoughts
It’s inexpensive and just by placing a hand near the unit you can feel the hot air being drawn out from your Xbox 360. For the price of a new faceplate, you can help protect your Xbox 360 and from my time with using NYKO’S Intercooler, the unit works as promised. It stays in place and is simple to remove if you ever take your Xbox 360 to a friend’s house or LAN Party Etc. The final word on NYKO’S Intercooler is that this compact unit has delivered exactly as the packaging and website states. Take a look at the unit and judge for yourself.

I Think I will end up getting this Unit sometime in the future Because it is pretty cheap and keeping the unit cool is a good plus for me since my room can sometimes get pretty hot in itself.

I advise that anyone that buys this product get their updated one that just recently shipped. By this time most stores will be out of stock of the previous version. This version had the potential to have a loose contact not between the unit and the 360 but the unit and the power cord, causing the loose power supply to light up at any given time sporadically and could go away if you just moved the power cord a little.
Their updated one has an improved locking system to attach the unit to the 360 more securely, and has metal tabs on the female side for the power cord to attach more securely. I’m going to assume this will take care of the power connection issue as their packaging now says this and I’m sure they had a lot of complaints in regards to this as people always referred to this at where I work when looking at it.
I will say on the positive side, that when measuring with a Snap-on Laser Temperature reading gun on the top of the 360 case towards the rear of the unit (exhaust outlet), temperatures dropped from 102′F to 92′F. You can drop your temp a little more when using the Pelican Fan Stand for the front intake but this could be just temperature variance when measuring (2′f – 3′f drop), not to mention it the fan stand won’t fit totally when using the nyko intercooler.
Overall: Excellent buy, so long as you get the updated one and not deal with the hassle of poor power connection.
Microsoft actually said that if you used the old version that your warranty was void because it caused the Xbox to crash and get the RROD(red ring of death)
My intercooler made my 360 much louder. As with any PC fans (which is what they are) the quality is a wide range – from Dell’s super quiet to other louder models. Sometimes it actually sounded like there were bits of rice or something rattling in there. Othertimes I thought I was living in an Airline Hangar.
Also, before you recommend this product you should also note that in some cases Microsoft has voided warranties for using the intercooler as it scorches the unit – and may actually cause the rings of death due to power drain (it has been recently speculated that power drain by using other items like a power bar may also cause the rings)

I could not take mine off quick enough
I had one of these and I actually got rid of it for a few reasons. It’s very loud; I had to reset the system clock each time I turned on my xbox360 because this interupts the power supply and my xbox360 isn’t connected to the internet; and I’ve heard that it drains a lot of power which is meant to go to the console that it can create more problems than it solves.
My verdict, stay far away from this thing and just put your console where it’s well ventilated.
It voids the warranty! Because it uses the xbox’s power, it voids the warranty. So even if it keeps it cooler, if it breaks, you are screwed!, there are just as good ones out there that have their own power supply so the don’t void the warranty.
I bought this product hoping it would help, all it seemed to do was cause extra noise. It kept the temp down, but in about a month of use i got the rings of death. I took the intercooler off and it has worked fine ever since.
i recommend the ex model i have had it for 2 years now and its great it keeps my 360 really cool
