AV FAQ – How can I record Xbox or Xbox 360 videos to my computer?

To record your fantastic Halo warthog trick (or whatever), you will need a video capture card in your PC. You can then either play your Xbox game directly on your computer monitor through your video capture card (and record as you play) or you can record your Xbox game to a VCR tape and then transfer the video into your PC.

If you visit our hardware forums there are active discussion about current video capture methods for the Xbox as well.

In regards to the Xbox 360, the same methods will apply, but there may also be additional ways you can record via a Windows Media Center PC as well. We do not have a confirmation in this as of yet however.

    You could use a DVD to USB capture device to record you stuff right to your computer in real-time. Take screenshots too! I use a thing called “xpert dvd maker usb.” Mine is the super-cheapo thirty-dollar version but there are much better capture devices than the one I have. Try checkin’ out a few of the Kworld products on their website. There are also video cards and other internal PCI slot products that do what you want.

    I like it because I can record Xbox360 moments and pretty much anything with a standard component (red yellow and white cable) output.

    I forgot to mention a VGA box might work too. I love them so if you find one cheap hit me up “cutelilmurderer@hotmail.com” I have not found an inexpensive one since Lik-Sang went down.

    In response to alternative methods that are listed above, there is one that I found especially helpful. Most digital camcorders have a function on them that will record video from a TV. However, not every way to do this is the same on every camcorder. Call the support line for your camcorder and ask if this can be done. With mine, a Cannon ZR300, all you do is change a “DV->DV” setting, changing it to “AV->DV”. This means that it will record what is on the TV. Plug the camcorder into the TV’s “video-out” plugs via analog cord and record. Some troubleshooting will probably be required, but don’t give up. It’s an easy and cheap solution that will help you to record great videos.

    can i put vids from halo 3 on a flash drive/travel drive? answer soon plz

  12. February 19th, 2008 at 15:42 | #12

    @Abe: If you record the video output to your PC and then copy that file to a flash drive, then yes.

    If you want to save them directly from Bungie.net/Halo 3 to your PC/flash drive, then no as far as I know.

    You could also go buy one of those digital camcorders Like aiptek for around $88 and just record your play, then just upload to your PC.

  20. June 20th, 2008 at 13:43 | #20

    @catalyst013 No the Xbox 360 has no slots for a capture card. It also has no way of loading a driver. Sorry

    I have my both PC and 360 (and PS3 as well) connected to a HDMI-Switch (using two HDMI cables for the two consoles and one DVI-HDMI cable for the PC) which is connected to my widescreen LCD monitor with a DVI-HDMI cable. Is there a way so that I can take advantage of this and record stuff from console on my PC using my monitor and this setup? What equipment do I eventually need?

  26. April 28th, 2009 at 17:10 | #26

    @Tom,
    No the only thing you can do with the equipment you listed is film the screen not capture. You need a capturing unit in order to do it not a camcorder.

    @Brian,
    Did you read the other questions and answers before writing this?
    You need a computer large hard drive correct editing software, video capturing card or device. It’s going to run you around 250+ US dollars to get started.
