EA Confirms Goldeneye: Rouge Agent
EA’s latest instalment in their best-selling series of officially licensed Bond titles has been the source of much conjecture for several months now, however with E3 now fast approaching, the world’s number one publisher of games has finally let-slip something a little more concrete on their intentions for 007’s next mission.
In a departure for the series, 007 won’t really be the primary focus in this new first-person shooter, with GoldenEye: Rogue Agent instead promising to locate the player as a dastardly Bond villain hell-bent on their own selfish desires. Rogue Agent will apparently be released on the Xbox, GameCube and PS2 this Autumn.
The game’s premise is typically Bond however, the lead character being dismissed as a 00 agent for MI6 after an act of ‘reckless brutality’, before earning employment in the house of anti-Bond Auric Goldfinger – a man found battling arch-enemy Dr. No for control of the world’s largest crime organisation.
In a perversion of the Bond film which we assumed had given the game its title, ‘GoldenEye’ is actually the player’s nickname having lost an eye to Dr. No, and had it replaced with a scientifically created synthetic one of a golden hue. Indeed it all sounds rather fun in a kitsch and hammy sort of way, EA also offering the following:
With a radical twist to the Bond franchise that makes the player’s goal to rule the world rather than save it, GoldenEye: Rogue Agent is the ultimate thrill ride through the 007 underworld.
Players will cross paths with such legendary allies and enemies as Oddjob, Scaramanga, Xenia Onatopp, and, of course, Pussy Galore on globe-spanning missions of vengeance and demolition.
Players will travel to famous and original Bond locations from the mountains of Switzerland to the streets of Hong Kong and from Fort Knox to Dr. No’s Crab Key lair in the Caribbean.
Enemies will react intelligently in combat situations and use the environment to their advantage for intense and unpredictable shootouts.
Rogue Agent will even offer wannabe Bond villains the chance to indulge in a spot of multiplayer action, in addition to the singleplayer plotline, offering not only split-screen action but online battles via PS2 Online. No confirmation of other online support is suggested, however we assume that Xbox Live could be supported too if a deal with Microsoft is finally concluded. More on this as we get it.
