With the WWE being the only wrestling program on television, it is refreshing
to see that we can finally wrestle with some of the older superstars that we no
longer see on the WWE games.

Graphics

Acclaim
took a different approach to how they wanted to make the wrestlers look. As of
late most wrestling games have tried to be as realistic looking as possible. So
Acclaim decides they wanted to take a different approach and that was to give
the wrestlers a cartoonist look. The only advantage to have cartoonist looking
wrestlers is so that there is room for error. Trust me there is a lot of flaws
in the graphics. When looking at all the wrestlers they all look very similar.
There bodies are all big, although the actual wrestlers were not all that big.
The hair on the wrestlers is rather funny to look at. They sort of look like someone
placed a wig on the wrestlers wrong.
Another problem I had with Legend of Wrestling’s graphics was the very unreliable
camera. It doesn’t seem to be in the right places at the right time. So there
will be some very irritating moments throughout the match. The worst portion
of the camera is when you go out of the ring. That’s where the camera is at
it’s worst. It gets extremely hard to see your wrestler and you get some really
weird camera angles.

Gameplay

Growing
up watching wrestling, and not really being able to play a video game as some
of those older wrestlers. Hands down the best feature of Legends of Wrestling
is that you can play as these legends of wrestling. The legends include wrestlers
such as, The Hulkster, Road Warrior Hawk and Animal, Brett Hart, Jerry The King
Lawyer, Rob Van Dam, and many more. Another nice feature is the ability to create
your own legend. You can create your own legends who you will be able to fight
with throughout the various game modes.
The amount of game modes are really what hurts Legends of Wrestling the most.
Really the only thing that you can do in Legends of Wrestling is wrestle with
two to four people in the ring. The only thing to make a match anything more
then wrestling is the weapons, but there is no Royal Rumble, Cage Match, and
all of the other matches that really are what make Wrestling games so entertaining.
So throughout the game you can have as many different match types with four
people and weapons as you want, but the game loses it’s flare after a couple
of matches.

The heart of the game is found in the Career mode where you pick a legend to
travel the US searching for fan approval. You start in the region of your choice
where you would like to start in the US. Really the object of the career mode,
besides just winning the match, is winning the fans approval. Through every
match you will see an audience approval meter which will fluctuate throughout
the game depending on how the crowd likes the match. This was such a cool idea,
because it really is what the wrestlers are out to do, and that is to gain fan
approval.
Although Acclaim was aimed at the right direction, I really thought the Gameplay
was a couple steps down from the smackdown level. If you are a fan of the Smackdown
series in ring Gameplay then you will probably be a little irritated with how
Legends of Wrestling works. I found it extremely hard to get good combos off.
The way it works is that you have to hit the moves at a specific time, but you
can also counter there moves by timing it just right. So there is a rather long
learning curve that must be met in order to be successful throughout Legends
of Wrestling.

Controls

The
overall control scheme is not to complicated, but using the controls is where
the difficulty comes. Each button represents a different move, but trying to
pull off the combo is where the difficulty comes. There is a long learning curve
that must be met in order to get your legend to the top..

Audio

In Legends
of Wrestling there really isn’t much sound throughout the game. For what is
there, it works fine throughout the game. The crowd sounds like an average wrestling
game crowd sounds. The overall sound effects throughout the game are pretty
realistic. I don’t have any complaints about Legends of Wrestling sound, so
the bottom line is it’s decent.

Replay Value

Legends of Wrestling does not hold it’s flare for very long. I think that if
there were different type of matches, like maybe a cage or a ladder match, then
it would be a great multiplayer game. Otherwise, unless you like to play one
on one matches for hours, it’s not much fun.

Overall Score

Overall Score: 7 out of 10 (not an average)

Additional Comments

Legends of Wrestling is an interesting twist to wrestling games,
it gives wrestling games a whole new aspect on how wrestling games can play,
the only problem is it’s not as fun as we had all hoped! If you’re a serious
wrestling fan then you may want to go rent this one!
