Perathia is a small, closed society with little in the way of any impetus to change. New ideas are slow to become accepted, tradition is among the most powerful compulsions for action. The Lore Guardians formed in an effort to protect the populace from hurting itself whenever some dangerous artifact was unearthed. Their knowledge increased through the study of the artifacts, and they’ve grown more into the role of “mystic protectors.” . . .

The dominant social group on Perathia is the immediate family, where primary loyalties lie. The Lore Guardians usually take as apprentices those children who have been orphaned. Additionally, most of the population of Perathia has absolutely no interest in history beyond the range of their own lives. Legends and stories are recounted from the past, but no effort is made to keep track of exactly how long ago these events occurred or to verify their validity. The obvious exception to this attitude is the membership of the Lore Guardians.

There is a single religion on Perathia, created from the fragmented historical records the Lore Guardians have discovered and translated over the centuries. Most Perathians believe in the Ancient Gods who “parted the poisonous veil” and placed their ancestors on this world centuries ago. The Gods set the Sun in place above them, molded the Realms of the Elements around them, and carved out the Realm of Death below. Within these Realms the Gods tasked their servants, the Elemental Guardians, to watch over the Perathians, providing for them and allowing no harm to befall them.

But tragically the Gods fought wars among themselves and their servants used the opportunity to rebel and rise up against their masters. When the Ancient Gods were destroyed, they used their great powers to “harness the souls of their servants” and placed each one into a disc. As long as the Lore Guardians watch over and protect the discs, the Guardians of the Elements are compelled to fulfill the wishes of the Gods, and protect Perathia.

As they translated the ancient texts relating to the discs, the Lore Guardians became aware of the dire consequences the books indicated if the discs were removed from their receptacles in the Temple. From this they inferred a Prophesy, promising the end of life on Perathia if the discs were destroyed. The Prophesy, although cloaked in the language of religion and mysticism, is absolutely accurate.

This is where the game begins. The discs have been broken. It is your job to restore them before all of Perathia is destroyed.
